5. CANNING STOCK ROUTE Our last two road trips are voyages for the well-equipped experts only. The Canning Stock Route stretches over 1700km between Halls Creek in the north and Wiluna in the south, passing through the Gibson, Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts. TANAMI ROAD Crossing the Tanami Desert from Halls Creek to Alice Springs via the Tanami Road 4WD track is a two-day adventure with some awe- inspiring surprises along the way, including the second largest meteorite crater in the world and freshwater wetlands filled with birdlife. WARLU WAY The Warlu Way follows the path of the Dreamtime serpent as it traverses Western Australia’s epic Pilbara Region – ancient and sacred landscapes rich in natural beauty and enchanting stories. The Warlu Way leads you almost 3,000km from sapphire seas and offshore islands, to lush oases, plunging gorges, soaring ranges and the ancient Aboriginal culture of Australia’s North West. See page 58 for more info. 4.CAPE LEVEQUE ROAD Stretching for 300km from Broome to the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, the Cape Leveque Road takes you along a pristine coastline of contrasting red cliffs, white sand and turquoise water. Accommodation ranges from luxury glamping to camping with the Traditional Owners. While the road is now sealed, high-clearance 4WD vehicles are still required to access the coast at various points along the route. See page 54 for more info. HIRE A CAR OR CAMPER, OR TAKE A TOUR Car and 4WD hire is available in Kununurra, Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha, Onslow, Paraburdoo and Newman. Campervan and camper trailer hire is available in Broome, Kununurra and Karratha. But if you’re worried about taking on the outback on your own, take your drive adventure with an expert guide!
